Report, Swedish Game Awards 2015

2015-06-16_-3On Monday June 16th, Diversi attended the final day of the Swedish Game Awards. The competition is Sweden’s largest for students of games/tech institutions in the Nordic region, studying game development and software engineering. The competition has been held annually since 2002 and is organized by the student organization Excitera.

In total 16 games had been nominated in eight categories by a jury, consisting of representatives from SGA partners King, Arrowhead Games, Digital Illusions CE, Sweden Game Arena and Diversi. A new category, “Best Diversity Effort”, was created for this year’s event in co-operation with Diversi, recognizing the best diversity effort in a game. 2015-06-16_-2 With a desire to champion the merits of diversity across all aspects of the videogames industry, Diversi identified the next generation of local Swedish developers as key to fostering a culture of acceptance, hence the decision to partner with the Swedish Game Awards.

Throughout the day, the nominated games we’re on display on the Expo floor, were attendees were able to play and vote for which game to win the “Gamer’s Choice” category. Later on in the evening, the Gala took place were the winners were announced.

Best Diversity Effort

Pernilla Sparrhult from Diversi presented the winner of “Best Diversity Effort”, which was won by Iris & Earl by Jocajo Entertainment with the following motivation:

The gaming industry and culture continues to evolve into a medium that is becoming a part of the everyday life of a vastly expanding range of people. We as an industry must therefore make sure that our medium is safe, welcoming and accessible by all our audiences.

The award for Best Diversity Effort this year goes to a game that acknowledges some of the different types of players that are actually out there in a way that is both showing and telling.

The winner is, Iris & Earl!”
